On July 17th 1975 the USA launched an Apollo rocket & on the same day the Soviet Union launched a Soyuz rocket.

Two days later the two spacecraft docked & the former adversaries met, shook hands, exchanged gifts & chatted.

The spacecraft remained docked for 44 hours. It was the first time that spacecraft built by different nations had docked and signaled an era of cooperation in space which would lead to the efforts to build a permanently occupied space station.

The mission also marked the end of an era – it was the final flight of the Apollo spacecraft. Both the Apollo & Soyuz crew were equipped with Speedmaster X-33 watches.
